Stephanie Regan opened Plush Consignments on October 6, 2012 in Oshawa, but recently snapped up an opportunity to move the store to Ajax.

Her mission is to offer her clients a selection of quality merchandise at reasonable prices, and to provide a fun shopping experience in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere.

Plush Consignments offers jeans from $12, t-shirts $5 - $8, dresses from $22. Also the store offers jewelry, both costume and sterling, shoes (new or darn close to it), purses, scarves and shapewear. We are kid-friendly with colouring books to keep the little ones occupied long enough for Mom to try on a pair of jeans or two; and if you manage to drag your husband we got a big comfy chair for him too.

FASHION SHOW FEATURING PLUS SIZE FASHIONS

Curvaceous Consignments, a consignment store for plus size woman on Queen Street E, put on a fabulous fashion show at the Balmy Beach Club on Oct.17. Clothing and accessories from the store were displayed around the large salon at Balmy Beach Club, and was available for purchase.

Linda Lundstrom, a Canadian designer known for her legendary LaParka coat, was the evening's MC.

Prizes were handed out prior to the fashion show, and a band kept everyone entertained with fantastic music.

Models of all shapes and sizes strutted their stuff down a small runway, showcasing flattering and versatile clothes.

The show highlighted some unique business-like attire, more casual get-up, as well as formal evening wear. A model even strutted down the runway in a wedding dress!

All the models were friends of Curvaceous Consignments.

All proceeds from the event will be used to sponsor a family from the Beach at Christmas.

In the 1,800-sqare-foot store, the company stocks a fabulous selection of brand names, including JNY, Louben, Picone, Kasper, Nygard, Olsen, Windsmoor and more, with designer labels, including Coach, Ribkoff, Lundstrom, Weitzman, Gerry Weber, Hilary Radley and Pappell.

There’s also an eclectic assortment of accessories, such as shoes, purses and jewelry to tempt all women, regardless of their clothing needs.

“Assisting my clients in choosing outfits that flatter their figures, experimenting with style, colour and shape, they discover, many for the first time, that dressing stylishly is attainable and affordable, regardless of size,” says owner Kathryn McCallum Pipes. “Shopping no longer becomes a chore but a pleasure, as our loyal customers repeatedly enjoy telling us ... We like to refer to this as ‘Resale Therapy!”

Plus-size ladies know their labels

Curvaceous Consignments is the only consignment/resale store in the GTA catering to the plus-size woman.

Live large. That’s the mission statement behind Curvaceous Consignments, the only consignment/resale store in the GTA catering to the plus-size woman.
Owner Kathryn McCallum Pipes carries size 14 up to size 6X (about 34 to 36).
It’s located at 8108 Yonge St. in Thornhill, but McCallum Pipes sees clients from all over Toronto, as well as Markham, Newmarket, Barrie, Sudbury and North Bay.
“Thornhill is an affluent neighbourhood,” she explains. “I get a lot of Marina Rinaldi (the plus-size sister line of upscale Italian label Max Mara). The ladies come in knowing the labels so I try to be upscale. Armani doesn’t make plus sizes even though 50 per cent of the female population in North America is size 14 and up.
“I was a plus-size woman. I was in the dentistry business (managing dental offices) for 35 years, but always had an eye for fashion and consignment.”
She discovered Curvaceous Consignments as a customer in 2009, started working there part time, then became a partner, and bought it outright in January, 2010. “This is my second act,” she laughs. “I started with a client list of 125 and it is now 645 within a year.”
The boutique has a homey feel. Customers can lounge on couches and sip tea, water, coffee or Diet Coke.
She carries everything from jeans to custom-made furs and formal wear; lingerie; shoes (sizes 5 to 12); purses; jewellery and accessories. Her labels include Eileen Fisher, Danier, Coach, Simon Chang, Jones New York, Liz Claiborne, Lane Bryant and Conrad C Petite, a line of plus-size petites. Price points range from $10 for tees to $2,000 mink coats. Suits are in the $100 to $150 range and formal dresses usually hover around $100 to $200.
Much of her clientele, she says, is going through lifestyle changes, such as retiring or rejoining the workforce after pregnancies. In cases of the latter, some clients haven’t shed their baby fat and don’t want to drop big bucks on business wear.
But being frugal doesn’t mean customers can’t be fashionable. “Plus-size women don’t have to wear shrouds or shapeless clothes,” McCallum Pipes adds.
Nor do men — she also has transgender clients.
“It is immensely satisfying to see women accept their particular body type and dress to enhance it, rather than hide under shapeless clothes. It is a remarkable transformation, both physically and emotionally.”
